The centre of Madrid has been transformed forever thanks to one of the most ambitious projects the city has undertaken in recent years: the remodelling of seven historic buildings designed by illustrious architects and built from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. A total of 72,000 m2 including the Galería Canalejas retail space, with 15,000 m2 that exudes luxury on each of its three floors.
One of the pillars of the project was the conservation and restoration of 16,000 ornamental elements that deserved protection due to their historical, artistic and/or architectural value, such as skylights, metalwork, windows and roofs, among others. KIMAK participated in this part of the project by manufacturing and installing some of these elements and pieces.
We worked on the grille at the main entrance to the Galería Canalejas, at calle Alcalá 10, one of the most emblematic and recognisable parts of this project. Inside, on the two upper floors where the retail spaces are located, we carried out the casings of the shop windows, which mix high-end materials such as brass, marble and stone.
We also recovered the safe, reinforcing its structure to place it in this new location, and the showcases that function as small windows for the brands in the shopping centre.
To adapt the space to the modern day and improve its accessibility, we installed an escalator that we lined to blend in with the environment. On the exterior, we manufactured and installed a wrought iron and glass canopy to protect the entrance to the Four Seasons Hotel.
In addition, the Isolée brand, located on the first floor, entrusted us with the manufacture of its furniture, which houses niche perfumery and cosmetics brands such as Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris, Chanel, La Prairie and Loewe, among many others.
Galería Canalejas is a clear example of the perfect balance between the classic and the contemporary, and of how a project executed with respect has the capacity to transform and restore all its splendour to the historic centre of a city like Madrid.
